  1. not a bad team. who chose the players?

  2. how does boro get 2 players in there but no knights players?? Fielding wins vic tuting by 15 votes last year and not selected?

    ReplyDelete
  3. hmm will Tassie be wearing a red and blue strip with "Ken Morton's Soccer school"
    written on it??

    ReplyDelete
  4. pennicott and downes in squad for not making u/20?

    ReplyDelete
  5. downes is on the bench each week at south but makes state team?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Where is the great COREY SMITH!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Pennicott deserves a place Downes can't even get a game in Seniors so what is his name doing on the list???

    ReplyDelete
  8. strong team but some absolute shockers.

    Marcello Marchioli - woeful
Jim Pennicott - better off in South U/20, not good enough for state.
Greg Downes - doesn't even put on a show in reserves legaue so why would he at this level?

    ReplyDelete
  9. team chosen from those nominated - presumably the player had to be available to play on the Tuesday night in Hobart to be nominated - may explain some absences?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ben Hamlett I believe is under 20. How can u be nominated for the mens state squad yet cant get into a southern under 20 squad. could someone explain this to me

    ReplyDelete
  11. Will Abott?

great talent but a bit young imo

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hahah Ludford in team you have to be joking.

    ReplyDelete
  13. pennicott in the best defence in the state. so should be in the state team

good grief, why is it so hard to face reality?the coach will be lucky to get 4 trainingsessions in with his whole squad in the limited time he has before the game takes place.if,as some people claim,he does not know or is never at premierleaguegames there is only one logical thing for him to do and that is look at the leagueladders and see who has done what.from the ladder he will see that the southdefence and midfield has outperformed the rest by miles, add the fact that these guys have played together all season and thus know eachother it stands to reason he cant do much better inthe short time he has.dont forget we are up against an aleagueside that has been playing and training together for a long time.if you want to see the best team and players that tassie can put on the park at short notice then cant avoid the fact south has at this time the best team so should supply the bulk of a tassie representative side.

  15. We all know why the knights get noone picked steve (pain in the ass )payne dont like anyone there that knows more than him.
Still on paper the team looks strong but under pressure these young guys will fold like a paper clip when the mariners rugged style of play begins - would have been better with a few more older wiser heads in there to steady the ship when the storm hits

  16. pennicott, brennan, abbot and other yound players alike have had stellar performances this season. Abbot being probably the best player in the TIS squad and pennicott and brennan both playing regularly and starting in south hobart senoirs team, who are undefeated! so putting them in this squad is a wise choice, they play against men every week and they will be able to cope with the step up in quality no doubt

  17. Garth from Knights was unlucky to miss out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good one Garthy

    ReplyDelete
  19. this is garth, that was not me,

    ReplyDelete
  20. July 13, 2010 9:07 PM

Abbot being a but young he is the same age as Pennicott and Brennan. They should show some young talent in game.

    ReplyDelete
  21. why were TIS players not considered for U/20s but Will Abbott picked for this squad. 8*2=16?

Having Pennicott, Downes, Hamlett etc miss out on the L'ton game but chosen in the senior squad is a joke. Was that just to make selectors feel better - will they make the cut??

Is the 12th best Sth player really better than ANY player at the Knights or the 3rd best player at Zebras ...

Why not just pick Ken Morton as Coach and get Sth Hobart to play the Mariners. We're heading that way anyway. Ken's done better than FFT/TIS with his programs. Just look waht he's done with Pennicott and Brennan.

    ReplyDelete
  22. so they just picked the players? no try outs or anything? nothing is really heard in the north. the south seem pretty reserved to big occassions like this, just another way they get one over the north. well done

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nah they didn't wanna go any more north that the actual CBD, Clar were lucky as they are to the East

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mann is best young forward in the state - by a mile!

    ReplyDelete
  25. ccm ? full strength team
    tassies youth and eagerness
final score mmmmm hows 12-0 look for a rough punt
hopefully they send down there seconds

    ReplyDelete
  26. How awesome would it be if we just put in a starting South Hobart 11 and if they could beat CCM then we could just put SH in for an A_League licence. Someone is pulling our leg with that selection, right? And tomorrow they will put out the real team!

    ReplyDelete
  27. When will you idiots realize that two players from each premier team had to be picked for under 20 squad. So not actually best young players In state but best 2 from each team. Think about it cronk can't score for toffee but in squad.

    ReplyDelete
  28. heard training is at KGV next Monday & Wednesday night (7 till 9pm) for squad before final selection of 16. tough ask travel wise for northern boys especially Eaves from Somerset. train Monday, home by roughly 2am Tuesday morning then do it all again on Wednesday!! All that with no guarantee of making the cut.

I agree that South deserve to have more participants than other clubs based on their success but 12??? Can't agree with that! I would only assume that Knights didn't put players forward. Same must be the case with Rangers and Burnie??

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sam K over Peters, got to be kidding. At least Peters get's tested during games.

    ReplyDelete
  30. After talking to a few Knights players, Corey Smith decided to nominate himself for the team. He actually sought out Steve Payne's phone number. quote unquote 'If I'm not selected, I'm going to quit playing.'

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wouldn't be the first time Corey has quit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @9.41....

    get a grip buddy!

I am a bit annoyed that not a single knights player was picked! funnily enough I am not quitting and your quote un-quote is completely farcical but... There are other players who missed out who deserve their spot more than me such as Ben Peter

Anyway enough said on the matter and good luck to those that have been picked, make a good account of yourselves!

    ReplyDelete
  33. apparently the knights coach was not even contacted?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Knights only nominated Benny Peter so he was the only one overlooked.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Corey good idea, congratulations to the players on the list hope you all make your state and your families proud. Well done on selection and best of luck to the final 16

    ReplyDelete
  36. Downes, McKeown, Pennicott. wtf

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mckeown should'nt be anywhere near that squad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A lot of clubs up north obviously didnt put anyone forward as they have a lot to play for in the next 5 or 6 weeks. Why would you release your best players for a meaningless game. Having them travel up to 4 hours, disrupt your club preparation, risk injury etc. Obvioulsy I realise the game fits in with the Mariners schedule however the SPL team can have it, their league is over, with even the top 4 decided for this seasons state challenge.

State games are important and FFT need to scheduele games like they did against Heidleberg a few years ago in October when the club season is done...

    ReplyDelete
  39. ccm will not play a full strength team against us so that is the only thing thats going to save us from getting a flogging as the squad pick is know where near the best state squad

    ReplyDelete
  40. corey is unlucky i beleive, if everyone played with the same passion as him the league would be alot better off, yes he does cross the line and alot of people dont like him but he is a good player and i would love him to be at my club if he ever left knights

    ReplyDelete
  41. downes only in side because of his father hes a very average player, liam scott will finally have to mark someone for the 1st time this year

    ReplyDelete
  42. The benefits of this match could have been far greater if the decision had been made with a bit of time beforehand. Lets be honest, KGV in its current state is not 'worthy' of hosting an A-League Side; however if the decision had been made earlier, perhaps some renovations could have been in order (Changerooms for one!).

mr payne is buried now under tons of sour grapes.i hope he digs himself out before the first trainingsession

    ReplyDelete
  44. FFT have done exceptioanlly well to be able to organise such a match at very short notice - it is obviously too good an opportunity to let go and hopefully EVERYONE will support the match regardless of who is finally chosen to represent the State.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I for one can't wait to go and watch a Tasmanian Team play quality football - hats off to FFT for organising. Let's hope it is a great game with Tassie claiming victory.

    ReplyDelete
  46. why so many southern players, last time there was a north v south, if i can remember correctly north won?? whats the go there ??

    ReplyDelete
  47. I hear olympic have bought a Brazillian international in for the last 4 games to try and rescue their season. Should be interesting!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. mckeown is one of the best strikers in the state... far better than hamlett and brennan...dont know about mann havent seen him play....he creates and scores alot of goals for eagles and works very hard and is very fit.... agree with corey....for once....lets support the team picked, no1 will be 100% happy...id like to see the team do well and being negative about it isnt going to get us anywhere

    ReplyDelete
  49. mckeown is definitely NOT better than andy brennan.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Why would anyone from the North bother? Both trainings are in Hobart! The North need a break a way administration. Why pay FFT when up North we get nothing back in return. Plus FFT poach our best juniors and get them to play down there. For what benefit???

    ReplyDelete
  51. I can't believe there is no knights players selected!!! Fielding should be a walk into the squad

    ReplyDelete
  52. mckeown is better than that brennan child. not enough experience. and north are hopeless. too much mouth, not enough football.

    ReplyDelete
  53. mckeown is an absolute girl. Brennan and Mann are alot better than him, they are two of the best young strikers the state has seen.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anon 1:28pm - Good to hear we are not the only ones who realised why downes gets a game.Glad to see others are on the same wave length (some just too scared to say anything)Hes just not good enough and shouldnt even be in the selection list

    ReplyDelete
  55. well done fft for organising, i look forward to seeing this match

    ReplyDelete
  56. andy brennan would have to be one of the worst strikers in the state, up himself like anything, cant stand him, McKeown is much better,, put him in a better side than eagles and he would perform even more,, a GREAT player.

    ReplyDelete
  57. TIS 5 Olympia Warriors NIL

    ReplyDelete
  58. The supposedly worst striker in the state who is in the best team in the state as well as kicking the most goals in the state, he must be TERRIBLE. Being 17 doesn't help how bad he is going either.

    ReplyDelete
  59. agree anon 8.56.... im sure if mckeown played for south he would be scoring alot more goals and look alot better..... brennan recieves the best service and therefore he doesnt have to do much but swing his boot at the ball to score....mckeown creates alot upfront and if hes not scoring he's creating opportunities for his teammates...im sure if u asked the defences from the SPL teams they would be more scared of mckeown than brennan....

    ReplyDelete
  60. Played against both recently McKeown is ok but Brennan actually makes runs to recieve the ball, McKeown is perfect for Eagels HOOOFFF down field, but offers little distribution wise and is no where near as clinical as brennan, havent played against mann so dont know anything about him. Downes is class, all you have to do is watch him play, Might not make the final cut but deserves his spot, remember most players from other clubs would only be bench warming/ playing reserves, Not many Midfielders would kick Bart or roach out. that being said i am certainly not a fan of south hobart, but credit where its due

Hold the game at aurua where the a leauge game is.Ground perfect, change rooms perfect,Seating awsome. Also this would allow more of the better players in the north to go for it,But wait fft wont pull there heads out from the SOUTH of there bodies.I can imagine when ccm turn up to kgv HOW much they will wet their pants laughing.

Did it occur to you that CCM may have asked to play in Hobart?
And that at making the request at short notice there may not have been many grounds available?
So should FFT knock the game back as a result?
You seem to have the answers!
This game will be good for Tassie football, regardless of whether the team is a Tassie side, Southern side or South Hobart. It's great that some Northern players have made themselves available and are willing to travel.
At such short notice we're doing well to get any sort of state team on the park!

  70. Who runs this blog??? I thought it was Callum Paske, but he told me he has nothing to do with it anymore. Anyone keen to clarify? This blog is just as bad as the anon's everyone hides behind. The writing is of a worse standard than a year 6 student.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anon 5:06 You don't have to read the comments and post if you don't want to.

Anyway my tip for the game CCM 19 Tas 0

    ReplyDelete
  72. I don't mean any disrespect to the CCM players when i say this, in fact i say it with complete respect for them.

But they are not world class players on multi-multi-million dollar contracts. They are great players sure, but they have had to rough it a lot of the time before the A-League started up at the end of the NSL and the like. A feature article on Johnny Hutchinson summed this up really well.

I'm saying all of this in response to the ridiculous earlier statement about facilities and such at KGV. Do you honestly think that these blokes will care that much? If we tried to host an A-League game at KGV then there might be questions asked but this isn't even close to that. The Mariners are definately not expecting fantastic facilities and i'm sure they have gone to many grounds and had to 'suffer' through mediocre facilities.

Come on people - These guys are professionals but i don't think they are that unrealistic! CCM have agreed to play at KGV so it's obviously good enough for them in this instance so it should be good enough for you!

    ReplyDelete
  73. your guys complain about everything. they organise a game and select players who were nominated by their own club. And if FFT didn't organise a game you would be complaining about how FFT would've missed the opportunity of a life time. How about just stop complaining and come along and enjoy yourselves.

  74. corey! you are so full of it! you said that to a couple of your team mates and they told other people. keep covering up your lies buddy! get a grip on your own ego!

  75. Anon 9:19pm (AKA Hero)

You need to get a grip. Who honestly cares if he said it or not? Does it really matter? If he wants to say something like that it's hardly front-page news. I wonder if Callan Paske would consider doing an article on this scandal:

    Corey Smith: The Ego

According to a person by the name of Anon on the Lowdown who heard from someone else that Corey told them .... blah blah blah.

    Shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  76. To pretty much all of the above:

Show some spirt get behind the Tasmanian team no matter who is in there. It will be a marvelous spectacle no matter who is chosen. An A-League team traveling down to Hobart to play a tasmanian team. This shows we are moving somewhere in our game. Get behind the fellow Tasmanians no matter which ones are put out there. Show some Tasmanian pride for crying out loud.

    Hypocrite!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'd like to know how I'm a hypocrite. I'm assuming it's because I'm also using Anon. Well, point out where in my post I slighted the person for going by Anonymous. It seems a fairly sensible idea considering the amount of personal attacks that occur on here. I'll identify myself when everyone else has to and until they do I won't criticise anyone for going by Anon.

My point was merely that whether Corey said something or not is so irrelevant. Who cares? Why should we put the bloke up against a wall and shoot him for it? I know not everyone does this but keep the criticism to a respectable level and on appropriate issues. What he supposedly said isn't even that bad (if he even said it all which he has said he didn't).

I was also making light that these people are getting their info from someone else who heard it from Corey. Not exactly the most reliable way of getting the truth i'm sure we can all agree!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I have organised a good old fashioned turkey shoot - no hunting licence required - entrants must be able to jump up out of no were and snipe there turkey without him having and defence - person bagging the most turkeys gets the 2010 gobbler award - extra points for bagging turkeys with deception - loss of points if the turkey escapes or fights back
Ok let the shoot begin turkeys on here start running haha.

  80. Can I reiterate that this is not my blog. I have, at times, contributed some writing but I take no ownership of the greater number of articles under which my name is not.

Please recognise that only stories or comments with my name underneath and from my google account are mine. I truly believe in standing behind my comments and my stories and as such will always have my name under them.

If anyone has a problem with that I am always available for contact from anyone in the soccer Tasmania community.

I regularly view the comments on here. Some are personal attacks, some are problems with FFT but all are personal opinions which, whether I agree with them or not, are valid. They are personal opinion and should be taken as such.

My view on the whole thing is that it has obviously been a rush job. Under those circumstances I believe FFT have tried to do the best they can. Is it good enough? Most definitely not. But with such a small amount of time to turn around a team I don't think we could ever expect to get it right. I certainly don't agree with the way the southern and northern teams have been selected. I don't believe you would see many other states go to that level of meddling to ensure all clubs were represented.

Having said all of this, and I apologise for the length, I am just happy that we have an opportunity to see an A league side play against a Tasmanian team. Yes there are players that are stiff not to be in there, but you could say the same for a lot of the world cup teams!

Lets just get to Aurora and KGV to support both fixtures and see what happens. Let the de-brief happen after that.

    Cheers,

    Callan

  81. May I say as a contributor to this blog the purpose of the Lowdown was to provide a place for people to make comment and see scores etc while Walter was away, nothing more nothing less. Originally it was hoped to have several contributing to the site but unfortunately this has not occurred - no matter though it has been a place we can come to make comment. We are all doing our best – end of story.

For those of you who have made personal attacks toward the blog fair enough. I would like to point out thought I choose to remain anonymous as I am not a journalist on any level just a fan. This was an act service to the broader community not an act to raise personal profile or ego. I apologise for offense caused to anyone for this blog because for some of you it has obviously not been good enough.

Just so you know the hits to the blog have ranged from 300 averages to a current 700 per day. Obviously not unique visitors but no doubt this blog was a service to our football community and hopefully when Walter is back you will all be a bit more appreciative of the countless unpaid hours he does.

By the way Walter is back next week and good thing I say. I tip my hat to Walter even more as he is a mighty person than I…

My only recommendation to Walter on his return is to advertise on his site as surely the man deserves to make some income from his efforts.

A FINAL word from me - I am looking forward to see a Tasmanian Team after a long absence regardless of who is wearing a strip. Only a positive for the state.

    Yours sincerely

    Football Fan

I agree in saying Brennan makes runs for the ball, that is why is looks good playing also...........gives us something to cheer about. Downes a class player????????????? Mate put your glasses on and watch from the sidelines - he panics and every ball goes to the opposition or out of the field. All his 'extra' training at the Morton Academy hasn't helped him in anyway..Downes is NOT a senior player!!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Will Abbott is being marked as an A-League player, and at this stage will go on to such success.

Clearly the most talented Centre-half in the state, I repeat 'talented'.

My only hope is that Tassie can put up a decent display. Central Coast are a big quick and physical team. Tassie's trouble is that they will get bullied all over the park.

Pitchford will start, but he's going to struggle big time with the aerial side of things, and he will get little protection from his defenders other than Dan Brown.

The defense looks too small and too slow to be able to cope with CCM attack.

Perhaps McKenna will be able to play as a holding midfielder to provide some strength between the mids and defense.

Strikers will struggle to get time on ball, expect a lot of falling over from Kanakaris (Spelling?)

Tough night to be had by all.
