FFT Media Release
Football Federation Tasmania announced that the selection of players for the Tasmanian state team to play the Hyundai A-League side, Central Coast Mariners in Hobart on July 27 is complete.
The following 16 players will represent Tasmania: Brayden Mann; Liam Scott; Jonathon Lo; Kostas Kanakaris; Bobby Eaves; Tom Roach; Andy Brennan; Ben Hamlett; Sam Kruijver; Will Abbott; Jim Pennicott; Marc Iseli; Nathan Pitchford; Marcello Marchioli; Daniel Brown; Chris McKenna.
Two alternative players are on stand-by: Ricky Self and Bart Beecroft.
"This week I have had the pleasure to work with 25 individuals who worked very hard and responded brilliantly to the challenge," said Steve Payne, Football Federation Tasmania Technical Director.
"I have the utmost respect for all 25 players and for the way they and our clubs responded to the call to arms."
Payne added: "It was extremely difficult to choose the final 16, but those are decisions that have to be made. I telephoned all the players individually and I must say that the reactions I had from players who did not make the cut were very supportive.
"This game is a big deal for Tasmania and whatever happens on the night, there are only positives to be taken from it. We all have to get behind our boys who have stepped up to the plate."
Payne would also like to thank former professional goalkeeper and respected Coach Neil Connell for his assistance in working with the goal keepers and Anthony Alexander, full-time southern development officer for Football Federation Tasmania for his invaluable input into the final selection process. Payne also acknowledged the efforts of Sandra Chisholm, who has taken on the role of sports trainer for the event.
"To all those who wish to make comment re this posting please comment without personal attack on indiviuals. Foul language and slander will result in your post being deleted.
Congratulations to those selected. All the best boys.

ReplyDeleteBest of luck on the night and we all look forward to a good game on Tuesday.
two kingborough players in squad hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteno ben crosswell who is the best player in the state, no ricky self, no jono ladic, no bart beecroft???????
ReplyDeleteso andy brennan is better than crosswell?? I think not!!
where did this selection come from??
even the back of a weetbix box would hold better selection tips than what this has given and am embarrassed by it
GO CENTRAL COAST
unbeliavable jim pennicott and abbott they wont send tis kids away with state sides anymore but will include them now ,as for pennicott as aker said dribbler .what a shit side payn knows nothing what a waste of time not to see our best on the park we are the laughing stock again and hope we get pumped so that the powers that be feel guilty for leaving class players out for kids of 15 that havnt stopped shittn yellow yet.joke
ReplyDeleteThis team is going to get flogged. Too flighty, no muscle no class no chance. Poor sam kruijver has no chance with connell looking after pitchford.
ReplyDeleteo dear my favorite player did not get picked so now i have throw a little tantrum and hope the whole team fails.may i remind you that all those picked are playing for tasmania and are tasmanian,so get over it because all those in theteam are going to play their hearts out and a little support is the least they deserve.
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolute bunch of tossers some of you posters are!! Show some support for a change or don't bother writing anything!
ReplyDeleteIn all likelihood, the Mariners will win convincingly, and they should!! They will no doubt be a better team than the South Melbourne NSL team that beat Tassie back in the 90's. We lost that 7-1 & 6-1 I think but this time you're dealing with full time professional players. Of course they should win but don't bag our players for their selection. I sincerely hope that this can be a stepping stone for some of the young members to progress their careers further. Please get out & support the lads!!
Get a grip you tools!!
i dont think it mattered what squad was picked, you lot would still find something wrong about it. Grow up and be real supporters of the game! this is a tasmanian team that was selected on how they did at training, so too bad if you think someone should be in there cause steve payne has picked the squad, not you! i'm grateful that you idiots arent picking the team, imagine that... pfft grow up
ReplyDeleteAnyonymous 4.13 you took the words from my keyboard! The few postings above are disgusting. Congratulations to all the players and so what that Abbott and Pennicott are 17 & 16 respectively. They both obviously played well enough at the training sessions to impress the Coach.
ReplyDeleteThe decision has been made, get over it, and get behind our Tasmanian State Team.
What a joke no Croswell or Self.
ReplyDeleteGoodluck to the team anyway
Well done to everyone picked. Go out there and do us proud
ReplyDeletegood luck to the team but get serious people!!
ReplyDeleteposted 4.13 - "steve payne has picked the team", that is half the problem as the guy has never seen premier league?
the bloggers probably could pick a better side
also why pick all of these young players unless they are the best (which they are NOT) players in the state?
this is a SENIOR state team and if the best players are not picked due to age than what does this give players over 21 in incentives to keep playing?
fft you amuse me
two kingborough players. enough said. hahahahahahahahahah
ReplyDeletesteve, with that squad i hope you have been taking driving lessons and learnt how to drive into kgv and 'park the bus', i guess that is why you have your kingborough contingent as they are expert bus parkers
ReplyDeleteno zebras players
ReplyDeleteno knights players
no chance
NO NO NO
possible 11 players from knights/zebras 11 that would take it up to or beat the state side.

My team in a 4-2-3-1
ReplyDeleteKruijver
Pennicot Brown Abbott Scott
Roach Eaves
Lo McKenna Kanakris
Brennan
Connell not even a GK coach. Alexander not been here two minutes. So yet again Payne gets people around him who know nothing and won't question him. Sad state of affairs.
ReplyDeleteVery surprised not to see Croswell and Beecroft in the side. Both are standout players in Tas. Beecroft exceptionally consistent and solid player and Croswell a danger man that can change a game in an instant but maybe not the team player that Payne wanted. Ludford probably unlucky to miss out to Iseli. Iseli very solid and strong but Ludford more cultured and technical. Probably came down to Iseli's strength and determination. Pennicott must have improved alot since last time I saw him play. Hamlet a good inclusion.
ReplyDeleteI can understand both sides of this arguement and i think/hope everybody is confused. we have the people wishing the team well which everybody should be doing, but also a lot of negative talk. i think this is a very similar situation to Australia's world cup campaign. it's not the players we are pissed off with. they have put them selves forward for selection and tried hard so well done and good luck. Its the 'Little men' that 'have' to be in control even though they have zero idea about who any of the players are, where they play, and what they are capable of. This is the problem, whether it is Pim or Payne (FFT) its the same deal. you need to know ur players for u to make a team!
ReplyDeleteConnel=most inflated opinion of ones self importance of anyone on planet earth.
ReplyDeletewell done to those in the team and I hope the game goes well, not only result-wise, but in terms of style of play!
ReplyDeleteStruggle to see how beecroft, crosswell, self and ludford didnt get in, Iseli not up to it, Pennicott the same and Hamlett will go missing. I agree with not enough strentgh or experience in the team but the young players in the team will be on a steep steep learning curve which may be good in the long run! go get'em boys!
Abbott best player at training last night,Brennan, Pennicott and Mann were solid also best 4 players in the games last night
ReplyDeletefuny to see how coreys name in the knights/zeb squad..
ReplyDeletecorey is a good player but has been sent off too many times and also the squad would be down to ten players as he would get sent off if you look at his track record...
can we talk about someone else?
ReplyDeleteAnon 4:48
ReplyDeleteClearly Corey Smith.
Although Bart is a very good player. He is a bit small and a bit slow. This results in some late tackles aimed at players ankles.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good squad in my opinion except I thougt Crosswell should be selected.
Go Tassie!!!
Good luck to the Tasmanian lads.
ReplyDeleteI can't see why Crosswell was not included. He is clearly the most talented player is the SPL. He would thrive at the higher level.
Beecroft, Ludford and Fagg very stiff to be left out.
Tough call to pick that squad even though there have been some raised eyebrows to players who have been included.
I wonder who advised Payne? He wouldn't recognise half these players if they bumped into each other on the street.
all reserve players should aspire to be like will abbott ,just be happy to play reserves football and be selected in a senior state team .jim pennicott not good enough payne must have been paid by morton to be selected .thought under 20 side was for just that not at the expense of good players that have earned there stripes not boys that obviously will falter easily how does a vic tuting medallist not be selected in best 25 ,throw the medal back fish .crosswell , self ,holmes.smith / alias/aker/ mcintyre better talent than abbott /barron better talent than abbott and pennicott .anyway i think yuo get it go tas /bullshit
ReplyDeleteHamlett before mckeown... Ur kidding
ReplyDeletethis team is going to get a hammering. how any anyone can choose hamlett, abbott, pennicott, iseli and marchioli to represent the footballing men of this state is beyond me. i for one am a player at a premier league club and played against all the players ive mentioned and wouldnt even pick them to start in any premier league team
ReplyDeleteLast time I saw Henry Fagg his hand was in plaster...might explain him missing...
ReplyDeleteeven the Warriors????
ReplyDeleteif everyone on this site bagging out kingborough knew anything about football you would know that iseli and marchioli are both top players and DO deserve to be in the state side
ReplyDeleteagreed, lets start getting behind our team!
ReplyDeleteWhat a disgrace FFT, you have a guy who hasnt seen a senior match and a guy who has been in the state two minutes selecting your MENS STATE TEAM.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder there are mistakes being made.
You have people like Itchins there who has been around football for awhile why not ask him to coach? You also have someone who has played against these guys in the last decade working there, did you ask Mckenna?
OMG how angry it makes me to see our game suffering fools.
How did Shay Hickey not make this team?
ReplyDeleteA better team from the south would be
ReplyDeletePeter
Ludford Holmes/Parker Fagg
Hicky Fielding/Beercroft Self
Crossa/Cripps
Bench
Downes
Clay
Telega
at the end of the day all tassie clubs are just social players and will never be a tassie a-league..
ReplyDeletebut still good 4 the young guys to strive to be the best in tassie..
also fft needs to have a playoff betwen top div 1 side and last prem side as who will ever finish last wil beat beachside anyway. as the old exp players wont play prem..
bring back the old state system like 10-15 yrs ago and you wil find soccer will be better for it. good crowds back then and tough teams not just 1 standout...
hahahaha marcelo and iseli hahahahahaha
ReplyDeletekingborough hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteiseli got the votes from julia gillard as the token ginga except if you look closely they made a mistake and picked ronald mcdonald.. i mean jim pennicott instead
ReplyDeletehttp://ffthahaha.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteits pretty sad when people have nothing better to do than slag other clubs and players
ReplyDeleteWe don't need to slag anyone off but CLEARLY the best 16 available Tassie players has not been selected here.
ReplyDeleteWhat we should have done is spent more time (cos we knew we had a curtain raiser opportunity a year ago) thinking about a Tassie Youth team to play in a curtain raiser on Sunday - maybe vs TIS??
We should have picked the best 16 for the game at KGV. What we have is a compromise team - half to rep Tassie and half to give some prommising young players a chance to be identified. BTW Sam Hughes and Sam McIntyre on sheer talent alone deserve that chance as much as anyone else
You said derogatory abusive posts would be removed. So do it and ban these muppets that try to give the impression they put football first.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to the boys but some very lucky inclusions...How can Ben Crosswell not be picked in this team?....he is by far the best player in the state...Very Disappointing.
ReplyDeleteKosta has been picked for one overhead kick. Wow maybe Mark Moncur should play upfront
ReplyDelete"this team is going to get a hammering. how any anyone can choose hamlett, abbott, pennicott, iseli and marchioli to represent the footballing men of this state is beyond me."
ReplyDeleteMeans:
This team is going to get a hammering because saying anything positive about them would justify me not being selected. How anyone can choose hamlett, abbott, pennicott, iseli and marchioli, when they didn't even pick me, to represent the footballing men of this state is beyond me (yeah, sidenote, they are actually representing Tassie as a whole, let the fans into the game yeah?)
"i for one am a player at a premier league club and played against all the players ive mentioned"
means:
I for one am a player at a premier league club and played against all the players i've mentioned so obviously i'm an expert and know exactly what I'm talking about, in fact, i know so much that I probably should be coaching this side myself, if only there were 11 of me then the side might be half decent.
"and wouldnt even pick them to start in any premier league team"
means:
and wouldn't even pick them to start in any premier league team because I really have to drive home the point about how bad these players are, just because they are better than me and got recognition for it. These coaches who are selecting them don't know anything. I'm the best.
haha thats good
ReplyDeleteKanakaris over croswell you've got to be joking
ReplyDeleteSettle down people , lets get behind the team the players who were Selected did not choose to be selected.and I am sure the will give their best.
ReplyDeleteBut to all the negative people out there if you were all as good as you think you are you would all be in the team.
Maybe if you all come along and watch the game you might learn something about football
I sincerely hope those people who object so strongly to this team selection will do everyone a favour and stay away when this match is played. I don't think Tasmanian football needs any animosity in the crowd.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, I call on the moderators of this blog to remove the BS posts that defame players who are trying to have a go.
So what Crossa is not picked. Maybe he couldn't make thew necessary commitment to make training, etc. The team is probably the best that is available that can meet the necessary criteria.
Some of you people really do need to take a good hard look at yourselves. I would suggest you also look to fill in your ample time doing something constructive because all you are doing here is being ultimately DEtructive.
It's a public blog people can have there say on the matter, I think some of the player selections are strange but what did we expect with Payne coaching he has never seen a Premier League game.
ReplyDeleteAt least we have a game to watch with a State Mens team playing a quality team.
Walter is back, GOODNIGHT THIS BLOG
ReplyDeletebeecroft is so overrated its not funny. roach 3 times the player. payne obviously wanted a team so didnt pick individuals - explains crosswell and selfs omission
ReplyDeletePfftt Self not a team player.. ive stopped reading this blog purely beceause of that comment..
ReplyDeletei agree with anon 12:32, beecroft may be be technically sound but rarely passes more than 5-10 metres and creates little. roach a far better alternative.
ReplyDeleteWhats the point of the match. Showcase some youngsters most likely. I don't think we could rely on star power from the premier league to dazzle the mariners.
ReplyDeleteMore likely a team of hard working, fit, quick players who will do as they are instructed. I don't think anyone will be dribbling through the Mariners. Containment with a sprinkle of promise to maybe set some youngsters onto better things.
anon 3.05pm you are correct.. this is the purpose of the game
ReplyDeleteNot a bad squad. A few massive selection issues as already highlighted! Bart is good in the wet when the game is slow, but would be crucified in a quick game. MacKenna from the dev is a funny choice also. when we played them, he was slow and unfit. picked on his past i think.
ReplyDeleteall in all, i will be there to watch and hope the guys selected do well
... Containment with a sprinkle of promise to maybe set some youngsters onto better things.

I said - not worth the $10 then. I want to see a real Tassie team!
Agree anon 6:00pm
ReplyDeleteMcKenna looked horrible at training. There were more versatile forwards than him that tried out.
Crosswell over him anyday. Maybe even Corey Smith haha
Ha Ha! plenty of disgruntled players (or parents of players)that didn't make the cut posting on here!! Get in your box fools & get over it!
ReplyDeleteLets all hope South Hobart, I mean Tasmania don't lose by too much next week.
ReplyDeletecentral coast will still be looking at players to sign so they will not be at full strength either with trialists and some reserves playing so take this into account it will even things up hopefully, this is the side i would i like to see
ReplyDeletepitchford
fagg,luck,dogga,scott
self,beecroft,roach,lo
crosswell,smith
with the younger guys on bench but go tas even with a under strength squad
Smith will NEVER be selected to play for Tassie again while he has his inflated in ego going unchecked. Crosswell too has an overinflated ego and would not deserve a starting spot in a Tassie team at the expense of a kid who is motivated and prepared to have a go even if he isn't ranked above the likes of Crosswell.
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem with most of Tasmania's football players, vast majority see themselves as something better yet forget where they are actually playing.
Crosswell has never proved himself on the big stage. Mann, Pennicott, Iseli, etc. are all prepared to have a go and learn something from the experience. You can't teach Crosswell or Smith anything, they know it all...ask them!!
Good luck to the selected Tassie team members. I'll be going along to support them.
Payne's squad is more a C&D (coaching and development) showcase rather than 'Tasmania's finest' as was supposed to be the case. I thought Sunday;s curtain raiser was all about the youth!
ReplyDeleteLaughs at the blokes who reckon McKenna is rubbish! He would start for any club in the state!
ReplyDeleteSmithers to captain tassie side
ReplyDeleteJackson Marsh spotted trialling with mariners at local night club under the watchful eye of several high profile local cricketers.
ReplyDeleteNorth u/20 1 lost to South u/20 6 (0-2 ht)

Mckenna would certainly play for any team in Tassie. The guy is 31 and is nearly single handley keeping Devonport in the title race. Has a great passion for representative football, and is apparently playing injured to boot!
ReplyDeletesmithers and crozza have played at good levels and realize their playing in tassie but could probably have played higher if they really aspired to? maybe they do know something about the game but I am sure they would both give their all for the state if they were selected. be serious guys. stop the personal barrage.
ReplyDeletecrosswell easily could have played NSL/A-League. Was unlucky not to get contract with the Melb knights way back in 2002.
ReplyDeleteHad no interest in chasing peanuts. Corey NO chacne to play at that level, maybe VPL bencher like sanders?
I wouldn't mind $650 for sitting on the bench a game like Sanders.
ReplyDeletehahaha sanders bench player in one of the strongest sides in vpl and then smithers has had offers from vpl clubs in the past also but chose to pursue his career off the field which has turned out pretty well, how do i know this? because it all happened while I was on the committee of metro when they were the best striking combination in the league
ReplyDeleteim sick of people bagging out every tasmanian who is playing the game or done more at a higher level than the average joe who just sits behind there computer, your bagging out every decent young and old player in the state, what do you think this is english premier league, i know a few people who know sanders to and from what iv heard he has started nearly every game so get off peoples backs

Same here, but matty's on more like 450-500 a week. basic starting wage at gully is 800 a week.
gd luck to him anyway.
