Walter's Back

Good News Walter is back and that can only be good news for Football in Tasmania.

The Lowdown will remian but will now focus on interviews of players and coaches from all the clubs. If you would like to nominate players or people of interest I would be glad to hear from you.

Thanks again for all the support over the past 5 weeks.

Cheers Football Fan!

  1. Get an interview with a reffing co-ordinator to explain why most of the refs down here are so bad!

  9. I am so pleased to have Walter back. At least he'll discourage the tools that this place seems to have attracted.

  11. Dogga Brown would definitely make for an interesting interview. The man is a reprobate.

  13. Perhaps July 23, 2010 7:40 PM ..The answer to your question lies in the standard of the players..Like it or not all Refs are human and make mistakes but rarely as many as our players make.

  14. Sounds like you're one of these bad refs!!

  15. No.. July 26, 2010 4:54 PM..Not one of those Bad referees ..Just an interested observer who has closely watched around 25 years of football in Tasmania and know nothing has changed ....players and spectators always blame referees because it easier than blaming your team mate for that bad pass, poor positioning lack of shape..poor fitness...need I go on..

  16. Regardless, it would be interesting to see what FFT are trying to do to get more refs as there clearly aren't enough. I know the course they offer is free but that's only because of FFA and that they pressganged almost all (if not all) of the TIS into the service.

It would also be interesting to hear what the referees are doing, what development is available to them and if there are promising new referees coming through because some of them are....ahem....getting on (no disrespect but they can't do it forever at the top level or even Div 1 etc) so we need new and quality talent coming through.

Ivan will hopefully be around for a while and there is Patrick and Brenton but who else? I am a little ignorant to the whole scene so correct me if i'm wrong but i'm not seeing too many in their age bracket approaching the top levels in the middle.

As a sidenote though I like that they are giving younger kids a go on the lines at a higher level. A good strategy by FFT I think. Anyway - I'd be interested at least.

  17. Anonymous 10.02 South Hobart Website has an interview with Sean Collins during which the subject of referees is discussed.

The reason we loose so mamy referees is the result of abuse - so a problem for all clubs. We need to change the culture to help promote healthy participation at all levels including refs.

  18. Should just accept getting some stick if you make bad decisions, Players make bad decisions and get dropped or abused.

  19. While that interview was interesting and insightful (as is any interview with one of the top dogs of the game administration) however it doesn't really say much about what they plan to do to increase their numbers. Everybody in the entire world knows that abuse and such is the leading cause of getting people out of the reffing gig. But you cannot simply keep pushing that up and acting as if there isn't anything they can do until that problem is sorted - Sorry, that problem won't be sorted. Ever.

I'd like to know the initiatives (if any) that they have in place to actively seek new refs. Referees need to be supported, but cannot hide forever from criticism. I don't think any of the current refs are under any illusions abou this and I have no doubt they all cop a fair amount of stick (just go to any premier league game). but usually the banter toward refs at the games is pretty light, almost with a touch of humour. Rarely is it ever biting malice in the words and tone.

No, things need to happen. We cannot accept mediocrity and to those who would retort that this is an amateur league beware - it doesn't mean we can't all aim for better skills (obviously when I say 'we' I don't mean me because I'm too old, too unfit and too unco to do anything these days). I'm just worried our game will degenerate further if the next crop of refs aren't at least on par with the current crop. But here is hoping that they are even better!
